Opossums live alone and have a home range of about one square mile. Mating season extends from January to July, during this short time a female opossum will have two litters each averaging about seven baby opossums. Because opossums are marsupial the gestation period is only 13 days, the young are blind and helpless when born. The babies develop in a pouch on the mother’s belly. On average the babies remain in the pouch for 7 to 8 weeks.
Opossums are the only marsupial found in North America. An adult opossum is about three feet long including the tail and weighs roughly 12 pounds.
Opossums can become a nuisance in both urban and rural areas. They will often play dead when frightened. Opossums tend to live under homes, porches, sheds and even in attics. This can become a major problem if left unattended. A Opossum in your attic or crawlspace can damage drywall, insulation, air ducts and electrical wires which can cause a fire. After the nuisance animal is removed, repairs must be done to prevent other animals or rodents from re infesting the affected areas.
